A Note from the Road

By Jonathan Schramm
Assistant Director, Undergraduate Admissions

As an Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions, most of what I do involves recruiting students. Recruitment can be as simple as responding to an email or as involved as giving an information session to visitors on campus. But sometimes it means physically getting in my car (a university-issued car to be exact usually late-model) and driving for miles and miles to high schools and college fairs across Virginia and the US, answering questions about Virginia Tech for anyone who's interested.

Right now I'm in Columbus, Ohio and before that I was in the Williamsburg, Virginia area. But it seems that no matter where I am, the questions (and answers) tend to be the same:

Q: What's the average
SAT?
A: 1250, critical reading and math, middle 50% 1160 – 1330

Q: What's the average
ACT?
A: 26, English and math, middle 50% 24 - 28

Q: What's the average
GPA?
A: We don't like to quote an average GPA. We feel that no matter where you go to school, if you have a strong A/B average, you'll be competitive here at VT.

Q: What are some of the
most popular majors?
A: Engineering, Business, Architecture, Biological Sciences (Pre-med), Communication, Psychology, etc.

Sometimes answering the same questions can be a bit monotonous, but I always enjoy talking to students.

So, if you see us out on the road, at a college fair or high school near you, don't hesitate to come up and chat. And don't leave with unanswered questions.
Applying to college can sometimes be overwhelming, and we're here to help!
